The venue was previously named for the Mormon Church leader David O. McKay. In 1995, his family donated $3 million for perpetual naming rights. His grandson, who was the major donor years ago, volunteered to allow the school to find a new title sponsor in return for moving the “David O McKay” name to the Education Building. A life-sized bronze statue of McKay that stood outside the Events Center was moved to the Education Building.
